Persons with HIV (PWH) Continuum

The PWH care continuum outlines the steps along the way through care and treatment for all PWH living through the end of the calendar year, with a goal to achieve and retain viral suppression. PWH who take HIV medicine as prescribed and get and keep an undetectable viral load have effectively no risk of transmitting HIV to their HIV-negative sexual partners.

  • Chart will display if there are at least three years of data.

  • Quartiles are calculated when data is available for at least 51 counties.

  • Population estimates are not available for persons whose county of residence is unknown. Given this, the denominator and associated rate are not available.

  • Persons with an HIV Diagnosis (PWH) or HIV prevalence data represent persons who were living with a diagnosis of HIV in Florida through the previous year, as of 06/30/2023, regardless of where they were diagnosed.

  • PWH data are updated each year from 1979 to the most recent reporting year to ensure a case has not been counted more than once. This update is necessary because duplicate cases may occur when persons with an HIV diagnosis move to a different county, state or country.

  • Rates are NOT available by Mode of Exposure

  • MMSC (formerly MSM) = Male-to-male Sexual Contact, IDU = Injection drug use, MMSC/IDU = Male-to-male Sexual Contact and Injection drug use, Hetero = Heterosexual Contact, Trans Sex Contact = Transgender Sexual Contact, Other = Other risk.

  • This is primary, quantitative data.

  • All population-based rates are calculated using July 1 Florida population estimates from the Florida Legislature, Office of Economic and Demographic Research.
